Bar Mitzvah Ceremony

Idea Bank for Bar or Bat Mitzvah sites.

There’s something special about holding a lifecycle event ceremony in Israel. It creates an emotional connection you will cherish the rest of your life. This is a small sample of the myriad ideas we have for venues for Bar and Bat Mitzvah celebrations in Israel . Let us design the Bat or Bar Mitzvah in Israel that is just right for your family.

Traditional Sites:

The Kotel, Western Wall in the Old City of Jerusalem:

This is THE traditional site for Bar or Bat Mitzvah ceremonies, the Holiest of the Holiest. Your Rabbi should arrive there as early as posssible  in order to grab a table for you. This site is preferred by orthodox and conserva-dox families. On the plus side, it is easy for all your guests to get to. However, women are not allowed in the men’s section and will need to be in the women’s section where they may feel less a part of the ceremony. There is no “rain alternative,” and the site can get extremely crowded. There is no shade.

Robinson’s Arch, in Jerusalem’s Old City:

Under the direction of the Conservative Movement, this site is at the Southern Steps of the Temple. The site is of spiritual and historic significance. You must have the Rabbi come early to get you your spot. If Robinson's Arch is your choice, don’t leave it to chance. It must be pre-booked. Call IsraelExperts to set this up with the Rabbi in advance.

Some of the benefits of this site include the fact that men and women are allowed to be together. It is logistically easy for all your guests to get to. There is no cost if you arrive before 9AM, but a donation will be required.  Shading “tents” are set up in various places to protect the participants from the sun.

However, while this is a magnificent site to have your simcha, the site is always very busy. There is no “rain alternative” though there is a little enclave where you can shield yourself, but it is small and the first one to grab it will get it.

Masada:

The fortress has been a popular site for a Bar or Bat Mitzvah for decades. The view is magnificent and the site is of historical and cultural importance. IsraelExperts will make the reservation and work with the on-site team to handle all requests. There are several shaded areas for the ceremony to take place.  There are fun meal options nearby, such as Bedouin tents, Abraham’s Tent and many Dead Sea hotels with spa options. You do need to consider the fact that it is not an easy site to get to, and you may need to provide transportation for guests who are not on tour with you.

Hotel and Catered Settings:

Hotels host many B’nai Mitzvah ceremonies each year. In the rainy winter season this is especially suitable. The flexibility of an indoor option in case of bad weather makes sense not only during the winter, but as an air conditioned option during the hot months. In Jerusalem, and in fact all over the country, we’re partial to garden terraces with wonderful food and magnificent views. We have hotels and party venues we like to work with, each uniquely special, each tested over time to deliver on promises.

However, your group may wish to try a different, more creative idea when it comes to your Bar or Bat Mitzvah venue. Some of these ideas may require an event planner.

Jerusalem area

Have your Bar or Bat Mitzvah ceremony at the traditional pilgrim site, Mt. Scopus, with magnificent views overlooking the Old City. This is where the Israelites arrived during the “Shlosha Regalim” – the three pilgrim festivals (Passover, Shavuot and Sukkot). We recommend using an event planner for the details here, as experience has proven ways to make your simcha more private and comfortable. We can recommend several excellent restaurants for afterward; our favorite is a traditional Moroccan restaurant with an optional belly dancer to make the celebration really special.

You can do your ceremony and celebration at Ein Yael Living Museum. This site does a particularly good Bat Mitzvah Program with hands-on workshops demonstrating daily life as it was during the time of the Bible. This is a wonderful activity for families arriving between March and September.

Hadassah Hospital Synagogue This venue is popular in particular with families affiliated with Hadassah. This famous hospital in Ein Karem is home to a synagogue with the world-famous Chagall stained glass windows. Originally established as a North American service organization to provide medical training and hospitals to the nascent state of Israel, Hadassah Hospital represents a source of pride to many of our mothers and grandmothers who volunteered and donated to the wonderful work of the organization. This site is appropriate for both Bar and Bat Mitzvahs. Celebratory meal can be held at one of the excellent restaurants in Ein Karem artist village

Interesting options abound in the center of the country too.

Consider an outdoor Bar or Bat Mitzvah ceremony at Sataf Springs. Thousands of years ago the Israelites developed agriculture on the sloping face of Mt. Eitan. Take an easy hike to plant a tree with JNF and finish the day with a festive meal in Sataf Village featuring Middle Eastern and Southern French cuisine.

Another interesting outdoor activity to consider for your Bar or Bat Mitzvah is Neot Kedumim, the Biblical Landscape Reserve. This park has “in house” staff that can assist you with the planning of your ceremony. In addition to a tour, the site offers a diverse agenda of workshops and even shepherding lessons for larger groups. You can have a meal on-site in a Bedouin tent or in a nearby restaurant.

If biblical landscape is not your thing and you prefer a more urban setting, consider a beachside ceremony in Tel Aviv. A terrific party venue for the right sized group is the Ilana Goor Museum. The private home, gallery, and studio of the artist are housed in an ancient building on the shores of Jaffa. Art and atmosphere combine in a really special space with sweeping views of the Mediterranean.

North

Ohel Yaakov Synagogue in Zichron Yaakov. In 1883, Baron Edmond James de Rothschild became the patron of the area which is now Zichron Yaakov and drew up plans for its residential layout and agricultural economy He renamed it in memory of his father, and also commissioned the construction of the magnificent Ohel Yaakov Synagogue to serve the town. Baron de Rothschild spared no expense to build the edifice, and the synagogue features a majestic ark made of white marble. The synagogue opened in 1886 and has conducted daily prayer services continuously. We can arrange a Bar Mitzvah ceremony in this magnificent synagogue and suggest some wonderful options for continuing the celebration. How about a party in a 1930s-era lighthouse with open porches offering a panoramic view of the sea? Or a meal in a 120 year old stone building in the heart of a winery?

Another idea we like is to hold your ceremony facing the sea at Rosh Hanikra. The cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean provide a dramatic backdrop. We can recommend an excellent area restaurant to continue your celebration. The ceremony and restaurant can also be paired with a tour of the natural grottos and spectacular beauty of this magnificent vista.

We’ve seen some really nice Bat Mitzvah ceremonies at the historic Yehiam Castle. We like to do a catered lunch in the 12th century Crusader-era castle to complete the day.

The mystical city of Safed features famous art galleries and, as one of Judaism’s four holy cities, it is home to ancient synagogues. This is a really special place to have a Bar Mitzvah ceremony, followed by lunch at a favorite spot overlooking Mt. Meron.

The ancient ruins at Katzrin are an anchor for a visit to the Golan. A Bar Mitzvah ceremony at the synagogue of this Talmudic village and archaeological site is a lovely way to see this part of the country. We can recommend several really good options for a dinner or brunch at an area kibbutz. A wonderful party we did in the area also featured horseback riding as an activity following the ceremony.

Another option we like a lot is to hold a ceremony and lunch at the Turkish era Shuni Fortress. Regarded as one of the most beautiful Roman-period complexes in the world, the site includes Roman pools and baths, an amphitheater and a sculpture museum. The Shuni Archaeological Museum, the Turkish Shuni Fortress itself, as well as a camp and educational center and the Jabotinsky Park and Forest are all in this area.

A few ideas in the South

  • Jeep tours and rappelling followed by a catered outdoor dinner in the Dead Sea area.
  • Burma Road hike or jeep tour and pioneer style kumsitz. Based on a Middle Eastern tradition, a Kumzitz (“come and sit”) is a gathering where you bring your instruments (guitars, bongo drums), your voices, and yourself to bond with others through music and fun around a campfire.
  • Beach parties with food and music.
  • Cave rappelling and archaeological dig in Bet Guvrin or Mitzpe Ramon.
  • Mitzpeh Ramon – Bar or Bat Mitzvah ceremony on the rim overlooking the crater, followed by a bike ride. Meal at a hotel or Bedouin tent with camel-riding.
